We discuss personal challenges, the importance of advocacy, and the transformative power of education and community involvement in nursing. S1E4 The Recovering Christian with Kyle Medlin, RN
Tuesday Jan 13, 2026
Tuesday Jan 13, 2026
Overview:
Kyle is a gay man, a poet, and a nurse. He struggled with both his physical and mental health in his 20+ year long journey to self-discovery. He was raised Christian, which provided him with a built-in community but also internalized guilt. He credits some of the church members with providing a supportive sounding board when struggling to label his sexuality. He spent years maintaining celibacy in an effort to combat his “homosexual urges”. During this time, he also earned his nursing degree from a Christian university. After emerging from “the closet”, he struggled with dating men as a virgin, both sexually and culturally. He used writing as a coping mechanism as he found his place in the queer community.
In this episode, Kyle and I discuss religious trauma and finding our queer identities. We share our experiences with growing up in religious environments, the challenges of accepting their sexualities, and the importance of advocacy and compassion in healthcare. The dialogue emphasizes the need for understanding and respect for patients' identities and the consequential mental health and physical disparities for the queer community. We talk about how to create safe spaces for individuals to express their true selves both in healthcare and in our personal lives.

S1E3 “Neurodivergent, Queer, and Traumatized.” with Cindy Lemburg MSW, LCSW
Tuesday Dec 30, 2025
Tuesday Dec 30, 2025
Overview:
Cindy works at Halcyon Mental Health, which is owned and operated by Aimee Whaley (Cindy’s wife) and Chris Nealy. They provide clients with a safe and relaxed therapy experience to address the things that are causing stress or not working in their lives. Instead of focusing on what is "wrong" with you, we start with the assumption that nothing is wrong - you are 100% who you are supposed to be. Regardless of background, culture or lifestyle, clients can expect an inviting space to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of judgment. Cindy’s specialties include folks impacted by trauma, minority stress, neurodivergence and are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. She incorporates various tools into my practice, but most of her work is rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and supporting a person's ability to live their life according to their personal values and beliefs. Finding a therapist that is a "good fit" can be a stressful and difficult process. Because of this, she invites all potential clients to treat our initial sessions as an "interview" to determine if she is the right therapist to meet your needs.

PATH - Providing Access to Trans Healthcare - charlottetranshealth.org/providing-access-to-trans-healthcare-path/
In this episode, Cindy and I explore the intersection of queerness, neurodivergence, and mental health. We discuss the significant overlap between neurodivergent individuals and the gender diverse population. These communities have difficulty finding quality mental and physical healthcare and are often misdiagnosed or turned away. Cindy shares insights from her work with the PATH program, which provides essential healthcare access for uninsured and underinsured transgender individuals. We discuss the impact of legislative changes on healthcare providers. There is a significant need for advocacy, representation in research, and affirming identities in mental and physical healthcare. Building trust within healthcare networks, particularly for the transgender and neurodivergent communities, is incredibly important for these individuals. We explore various community resources, the role of Discord in fostering connections, and the challenges faced in accessing legal and financial support. Advocacy and continuing education for healthcare professionals is essential. Understanding patient needs, creating safe spaces, and the impact of professional organizations promotes advocacy. We need to encourage self-identification and accommodations for neurodivergent individuals by providing up-to-date resources and education for healthcare providers.

In this conversation, Beverly and I discuss the importance of allyship, personal experiences with the LGBTQIA+ community, and the ethical challenges faced in healthcare. They explore the role of chaplains, the impact of racism on health disparities, and the significance of advocacy through organizations like NAACP and PFLAG. The discussion emphasizes the need for respect in healthcare, the importance of patient autonomy, and the role of education in improving care for marginalized communities. We talk about the critical need for accessible gender affirming care, the disparities in healthcare that marginalized communities experience, and the importance of patient advocacy. Beverly shares personal experiences related to cultural influences on weddings, the ethical dilemmas in healthcare, and the significance of patient autonomy. The discussion also touches on the challenges within emergency medicine, the necessity for universal healthcare, and the dignity required in end-of-life care. Throughout, we emphasize the importance of understanding and utilizing available resources to improve patient outcomes and experiences.
